Making it REAL Creative
Making it REAL Creative builds on the successful model of Making it REAL as a foundation for developing early literacy. Making it REAL Creative extends the REAL concept through partnerships with artists and cultural organisations, embedding creativity and cultural engagement in literacy development through a multi-agency approach, connecting early years practitioners with local artists and cultural organisations within a community.
Example: REAL Creative project in Hastings
The REAL Creative project involved eight early years settings across Hastings between January and July 2019. Of these, one was a school-based nursery and lead setting for the Early Years hub but the majority were in the private, voluntary and independent (PVI) sector. Each setting was paired with a creative practitioner, experienced in working with young children. These included a poet and illustrator; a theatre practitioner and a local storyteller. Cultural venues - De La Warr Pavilion, Hastings Museum, Jerwood Gallery and Hastings Libraries - were likewise an essential part of the programme.
Children across the cohort made substantial progress in all areas of communication: listening and attention; talking; understanding and social communication. Parents' attitudes also altered and their ability to recognise and act on learning opportunities increased significantly, indicating the probability of long-term improvement in the HLE.
I’ve picked up things to take home, incorporating music and movement into stories.
